Plot
Four turbulent decades during the Troubles in Northern Ireland
The real Dolours Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Rea. During that time, Rea appeared in the film for which she is probably best known in America: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game. In that film, Rea plays Fergus, an extremely reluctant and double-minded member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the same organization Price was involved with for many years. Let me start by saying that the production of this series is excellent, the acting is great, and the overall story is fascinating.
These things normally only interest people from the island, people who were directly involved, or history buffs
As a Northern Irishman, it’s always great to see anything from here on TV or in the movies, but it usually seems like “B-grade” production at its finest. I’m excited to say that’s not the case with “Say Nothing.” This series was so well done that I think people all over the world will watch it and praise it. But I think this will appeal to a wider audience because it is presented as a character-driven drama series at the centre. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched something and heard a Northern Irish accent so mangled to the point that I cringe.
We’re not sure where they hid, but they were eventually found!
I’ve always thought, if only we had top-notch actors (other than Liam Neeson) who could be seen in these roles. The acting was excellent throughout the show and it’s great to see some local talent getting the recognition they so desperately need and deserve. I didn’t know most of the cast of this show, but if at least one or two don’t go on to be household names in the UK, I’d be surprised (especially the actors who played the Price sisters). I haven’t read the book, though I imagine it’s more historical and focuses on the events of the Troubles.
The show definitely keeps this historical and cultural influence in mind throughout, even though it is largely character-driven
It does a great job of developing the characters and showing all their sides, displaying a lot of emotion in people we would probably prefer to see as one-dimensional in real life. My only reservation about this show is that I felt the narrative of the issues was a little one-sided. The focus is of course on the IRA/Republican movement, as such it is no surprise that they are seen as the main character. However, there are two sides to the story of the Belfast conflict, and it seems as though the Protestant/Aionist side has been left out completely.
I imagine this will be difficult for a lot of people, especially those directly affected and those who may still be mourning the loss of loved ones
I think they did a good job of showing how nasty things got and how the lines shifted, the blurring of right and wrong, even in times of war and even when you are convinced that the only correct opinion is your own. I hope people can enjoy it for what it is – excellent television on a subject that most of the world may have forgotten or never heard of – and I hope that prejudices don’t get in the way of enjoying a good show.
