Plot

Actor Willis Wu witnesses a crime in Chinatown while working on a TV series. In the process, he unravels a criminal network and discovers the life in the spotlight he’d dreamed of. Yang), Fatty (Ronny Chieng) and Carl (Chau Long) see Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) on TV and debate her possible ethnicity: Carl says, “She looks Thai,” while Fatty replied, “Dude, she’s definitely Korean. Know your Asians.” Bennet is actually the child of a white mother and a Chinese father. Earlier in her acting career, she changed her last name from Wang to Bennet (her father’s first name) after encountering casting agents who said they couldn’t cast her as Asian or Asian-American characters, but her name also kept her from being considered for white characters.

“Interior Chinatown” is different

I usually know within one episode if I’m going to stick with a show. After watching 2 episodes, the jury is still out. So what is this show about? The themes (so far) seem to be: what happens when we are personally defeated, how to offer support to others, and discovering our purpose and potential in life. This highly stylized series is a mix of fantasy, satirical comics, and polished Hollywood set pieces.

The combo will work for some viewers. For others, it will be sensory overload. Does this show go too far to impress and seduce the viewer? First, a few positives: the set design and lighting are exceptional. The offbeat and effective music sets the tone.

Overall, the casting is adequate, but several characterizations fall flat, mainly due to the direction. Yang as Willis (the central role), his buddy Fatty (Ronny Chieng), and Jimmy’s father (Tzi Ma). A major negative for me: the writing is uneven. There are some genuinely funny moments, but some scenes go too far with physical gags. For example, when Willis tries to break into a building…

it drags on way too long. A few minor elements are off-putting: the amount of stuff crammed into the dark homes of several Chinese characters is ridiculous. So they look like hoarders, just because they live in a cramped old building in a dodgy part of town? Next: The lead detective’s (played by Lisa Gilroy) heavy makeup is too perfectly applied, which exaggerates the stereotype of generally attractive women in police series.
